Sir,

I have the honour to transmit for your informa-

-tion 12 copies of the prospectus of the Hongkong University which

has just been issued.

The coat of arms has been settled after corres-

-pondence with the proper authority in England.

3.

The Faculty of Arts has been opened on a guarantees of $10,000 per annum by Chinese residents in the event of sufficient funds not being available to maintain the Faculty after provision for the present necessities of the Faculties of Engineering and Medicine.

I also enclose copy of letter which I addressed, on behalf of the Council of the University, to Sir

Thomas Jackson who is Chairman of a Committee in London which

represents the University, and of another letter which I addressed

to Mr. Andrew Carnegie. These letters show the need for further

funds in aid of the Faculties of Engineering and Medicine and of a

Library. No replies have as yet been received to these lettera.

In the meantime Professor Middleton Smith, who

presides over the Engineering Faculty, has succeeded in interesting Engineering Firms in England in the University, with the result

that donations of the Machinery and apparatus shem in the attached

lists have been received, Freight upon the same has also been remitted by the Shipping Companies. The value of this plant includ-
